An important Milestone on the Road to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, TiE Global (TiE Inc.) has created significant economic impact by mentoring 125 women in 27 mostly Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India. A first-of-its-kind program, the All-India Road Show on Women’s Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship (AIRSWEEE), was initiated in September 2016 with the objective of educating and inspiring women in small cities in India to consider entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding career path so as to empower women. This program is in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and American Consulates across India.
The program was conducted in two phases. In Phase 1, TiE Global invited U.S. and India based mentors to train aspiring and early stage women entrepreneurs by conducting workshops in 5 cities. These included Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Warangal (Telangana), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Nagpur (Maharashtra) and Durgapur (West Bengal). In Phase 2, 25 participants were selected to undergo additional mentoring for a period of 6 months.
The initial program impact is evident in the increase in business activity of the participants’ enterprises as evidenced by the better definition of their business models, sharpening of focus of growth strategies, increase in revenue, increase in number of customers and increase in the number of jobs created by businesses owned by AIRSWEEE participants.
In a first for TiE and the U.S. Mission in India, eight leading American entrepreneurs/mentors, along with their Indian counterparts and alumni of U.S. exchange programs, shared best practices, providing practical tools, skills and mentorship opportunities to early stage Indian women entrepreneurs. The mentors were selected for their proven track records in launching successful businesses and for their passion and dedication to promoting entrepreneurship. The U.S. mentors came from cities across the US including Santa Clara, CA, Denver, CO, Philadelphia, PA, Miami, FL, Detroit MI, and New York, NY.
Speaking of the impact, Ms. Seema Chaturvedi, Chairperson, Project AIRSWEEE noted, “The program has created a multi-dimensional impact. Economic empowerment of a woman creates a ripple effect, which not only catalyzes gender equality and resulting positive social reforms but can also truly have a multi-generational impact.”
Vijay Menon, Executive Director noted that, “Project AIRSWEEE has sharpened the focus within TiE’s ecosystem to further promote entrepreneurship initiatives for women within the TiE ecosystem.”
Speaking about AIRSWEEE, Craig Dicker, Counselor for Cultural Affairs at the American Embassy in New Delhi said, “India is a country bursting with potential, particularly amongst entrepreneurs, but it’s largely untapped, especially in Tier II cities amongst women. The U.S. government’s objective through this program was to tap into some of this amazing potential amongst women in second tied cities to encourage them, to support them, to help them network, to mentor them to believe in themselves, not only to launch a start-up but to reach commercial success. Our objective was to empower women in second tier cities through entrepreneurship, so that they can become leaders.”
TiE and the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi will co-host a convocation ceremony for AIRSWEEE participants in a workshop titled, “HER POWER: A Women Entrepreneurs Conclave,” to be held at the American Center in New Delhi on September 11 and 12, 2017.
An important collaboration between the U.S. and India, the Conclave is a significant milestone on the Road to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) to be held in Hyderabad from November 28-30, 2017.
